White Smoke In Columbus: We Have a (Woman) Presiding Bishop!


No kidding, no satire-- nothing but pure, disbelieving joy! This just in from Episcopal News Service:

Katharine Jefferts Schori, Bishop of the Diocese of Nevada, was elected the 26th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, June 18, on the fifth ballot cast by the House of Bishops. Her election was confirmed by the House of Deputies, as is required by church canons. Below are the results of each ballot as tallied by the House of Bishops and released by the Voting Secretary of the House of Deputies.

House of Deputies confirmed Jefferts Schori's election in a vote by orders.In the lay order, from the 108 diocesan deputations voting, 93 voted yes; 8 voted no; 7 were divided.In the clerical order, in the same number of dioceses, 94 voted yes; 10 voted no; 4 were divided. Thus, both orders confirmed Jefferts Schori's election.

I have to say, I was sort of pushing for Gulick because I am friends with his daughter--but this is very exciting! I know that a lot of people were burning bridges when the Very Rev. Martha Horne was chosen as the dean of VTS. I can only imagine what the old schoolers will do...
